Hey, everyone! I just came back from three weeks in China and I made a comic journal while I was there! It ties in with some earlier travel comics I made (that’s why I’m called Gini and Stuart’s named Sam). I’m going to post a few pages at a time so as not to break the internet, so keep coming back for the latest update!

I drew all the characters as animals (just like in my book Vern and Lettuce) because they’re easier to draw quickly than people. (I think my Gini and Sam moles are what originally inspired the anarchic moles in V&L.) Travel comics are generally fast and scrappy, you usually have to draw them while you’re riding on a bucking bus or rattling around in an airplane during turbulence. So any bizarre ink splodges or strangely wiggly lines are souvenirs of the trip, not mistakes.

GINI & SAM GO TO CHINA

…to be continued! (Our fab Chinese-American guide Jasmine came to us through Jasmine’s China Adventure Tours.)

Now read Part 2!

Oh, and the serenity of that photo is a total lie; you can’t see the housekeeper behind the camera snorting with annoyance because I won’t get off the bed so she can put a sheet over the shiny red duvet.

Brilliant comic diary, what a fab idea. Wish I was as talented as you! ☺

haha! You definitely persevered with your appearance of serenity though…

I love the moles’ noses for some reason! Looking forward to the next installment.

I love this! When I went to Beijing about 26 years ago there were bicycles everywhere and only a couple of grand hotels AND the waiters stopped at lunchtime to have lunch. When I returned to China two years ago – Shanghai this time – it was all big billboards, fancy cars and our hotel room had such a nice view – the shower had a full length window so that you didn’t have to stop looking out. Can’t wait for the rest of the comic, Sarah!

Thanks, everyone! Ha ha, we had one of those floor-to-ceiling windows in our bathroom, so you could see everything that went on there from the bedroom (and any visiting window cleaner, I suppose). But we did see wait staff all eating meals together in the restaurants, that was kind of nice. Except then they had to listen to a big pep talk and chant slogans and sing the company song. Eek!
