I don’t envy authors.
My preferred method of communication is to make a picture, then withdraw to a safe distance and hope that someone, somewhere likes it. Any discussion of the work to my face, positive or negative, usually involves a great degree of squirming on my part. This is mainly because I’m never entirely happy with what I’ve created - without deadlines I’d never finish anything. I’d probably still be working on my first job if the pesky publisher wasn’t in such a hurry…
Recently, I’ve found a way of dealing with this rather annoying lack of confidence. There is a stretch of river nearby that I’m rather obsessed with. I draw it frequently; stories and ideas and music bubble over the mossy boulders. There are no deadlines, nothing has to be finished; it’s more of an ongoing dialogue – a project without an end.

100% agree, I read an article by John Howe where he said that he had frequently given work to print and then carried on working on it afterwards! – Its even worse for me now since i started working digitally as you can just keep going into an image without the fear of ruining it!
p.s. great work, massive fan of the disappearing Bilbo hobbit cover!

Wonderful, these river pictures – wow! Great that you’ve found a place that frees you from the deadline straps and gives you permission to play. Rivers are good for that…?

Thanks Richard. It’s comforting to know a lot of artists share this affliction!

Gosh. If I could produce anything like even a tiny corner of these, I’d be VERY happy …
